Under SDG3, We strive to advance community health and wellbeing by providing comprehensive health education and promoting preventive health practices. We are committed to improve access to information and services on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights-(SRHR), HIV/AIDS, Mental health among young people and also nutrition, maternal and childcare services.
Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Sessions
EMDEF conducts targeted Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) awareness sessions in secondary schools and youth clubs to empower girls with essential knowledge and skills related to sexual and reproductive health. These sessions cover a comprehensive range of topics, including puberty, menstrual hygiene management, contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual health, healthy relationships, safe sex practices, pregnancy, reproduction, HIV transmission and preventive measures, consent, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The initiative aims to equip participants with the information needed to make informed decisions about their sexual health, thereby promoting their overall well-being and fostering a deeper understanding of crucial health and social issues.
Mental Health Awareness Campaign
EMDEF, in partnership with iMIND initiative, responded to the escalating mental health challenges in Malawi by conducting two distinct 25-week mental health awareness campaigns aired live on Times radio. The first campaign aired for 10 weeks in 2022, broadcasting every Saturday from 11am to 12pm, while the second campaign aired for 25 weeks from June to December 2023. These initiatives were a proactive response to rising suicide and attempted suicide rates documented by the Ministry of Health in Malawi. The primary objective of both campaigns was to educate young people about mental health issues and promote a culture of seeking psychosocial support and counseling. By leveraging the reach of Times radio, EMDEF aimed to raise awareness and reduce stigma associated with mental illness among youth. Each broadcast included expert discussions, personal testimonials, and practical advice on managing mental health challenges effectively.
In addition to the radio broadcasts, EMDEF actively engaged youth through the formation of mental health clubs in schools and communities. Two youth clubs, each comprising 20 members, were established to champion mental health awareness. These clubs served as platforms for ongoing discussions, activities, and initiatives related to mental health education and support within their respective schools and communities.
