PROJECT
Water, Sanitation and Health
Extra Mile Development Foundation invested over $22,000 on initiatives to promote sanitation and hygiene practices and also menstrual hygiene in four primary schools in Mzimba North. The organisation partnered with Hilden Charitable Fund, Nederlands Albert Schweitzer Fonds (NASF), Toilets for All and World Connect Malawi.
For instance, in the period of 2022-2023 we have constructed 4 changing room blocks, 2 boys urinal blocks, provided hand-washing facilities and sewing machines for production of re-usable sanitary pads at Enthongeni primary school, Engcongolweni Primary School, Embombeni Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mtwalo and St Dominic Primary School in T/A Jalavikuba. This initiative has impacted over 2100 learners directly as they are able to access better sanitation facilities, hand washing stations and increased knowledge on hygiene practices. The cases of open urination and defecation have decreased around the school premises. Also class attendance rates from the school records show improvement hence improving their class performance as before the project, adolescent girls could miss classes for 3 or 4 days a month due to lack of sanitary pads and a change room block which therefore affected their class performance.
